Turn of the year - time to think and reflect

From Sabine Walter, Head of netzwerk managementberatung | coaching

"Walk slowly when you are in a hurry." The first part of this Japanese proverb sums up what the end of the year is all about, in addition to all the festive preparations. Before we rush into the new year full of verve and many good intentions, we should take a step back and reflect on the current year.

Self-reflection - an elementary part of personal development

We have put together some questions to help you with this reflection:

Take stock

  • If I were to make a feature film about this year, what would the title be?
  • What do I associate with this title?
  • What role(s) did I have?
  • How did I do with these roles?
  • Which scenes of this "film" particularly touched me? Why?
  • Which people have particularly touched me this year? Why?
  • What inner doors have these touches opened for me? With what consequences?
  • Which "film" scenes have fallen victim to editing? Why?
  • What was I particularly happy about this year?
  • Who or what has particularly inspired me this year?
  • What have I taken more time for than usual this year? With what result?

Recognising one's own resources

  • What have I achieved this year?
  • What did I particularly succeed in doing? By what?
  • What have I grown from?
  • What are the things I am proud of?
  • What things should I be proud of?
  • What have I moved together with others?
  • Through what have we succeeded?
  • What new paths have I taken this year? What have I learned along the way?
  • What are my immeasurable sources of energy? How did I tap into them?
  • What new things have I learned about myself?
  • Which lost talents have I rediscovered?

On the basis of reflection, the new year can be thought through and its core elements defined. It is important that you move from thinking to acting and define and take the first concrete, manageable steps.

Design new

  • What should be the title of next year's film?
  • Why would this title be appropriate?
  • What role do I take in the film?
  • What experiences from this year will flow into the new year?
  • What would I like to have achieved at the end of the coming year - personally, privately, professionally?
  • Why is it important for me to achieve this?
  • What are my first 3 concrete steps towards the desired result?
  • With whom would I like to intensify contact?
  • From which contacts / people do I withdraw?
  • What do I plan more time for? When exactly?
  • What do I want to keep?
  • What would I like to intensify / expand in the coming year?
  • What will I let go of?

These questions represent only a small selection of the questions that will help you take stock, gain a little more awareness of your inner safe and think through the key elements of the new year.

Everything we need is within us. We just lose sight of it sometimes. I wish you a reflective Christmas season! Stay healthy!
